Many people have asked me, "Why do I need to learn gun safety? I don't have any guns in my house."
This is a valid point - IF your family never goes anywhere.
Do your children visit homes with firearms? Do your children play at parks where a firearm could be dropped?
Firearm Safety is not about owning firearms it is about being safe around firearms.
Many years ago I was acquainted with a young girl who was 12 years old. She was spending the night at a friends house. While the friend was feeding her pet hamster the water bottle was broken. The friend told the young woman to get a replacement bottle from the top shelf of her bedroom closet. This young woman felt around on the closet shelf and her hand seized upon an object. It was a gun.
Thinking it was a toy she pointed it at her friend and asked, "Is this a toy?" as she pulled the trigger. Unfortunately it was not a toy gun. This young girl has had to live with the tragic consequences of her lack of firearm safety education. This was an accident that did not happen in her own home but it could have been prevented with just a little bit of education.
