Not all home defense ideas are good
With the pandemic forcing more and more people to work at home many people have been evaluating their security needs. Recently I was asked by a client to evaluate and suggest some alternatives for concealing a handgun under their desk. Rather than go through all of the options I want to focus on one that I think is a particularly bad idea. I was sent a link to review. In this link, the author wrote that he had devised a new way to conceal his pistol under his desk and still keep it handy n case it was needed. The author wrote that he took a belt and cut it into two pieces. One of these pieces he mounted to the bottom of the top of his desk, where his chair and legs occupy. By placing this belt there he was able to place his CCW holster in the belt and keep it close at hand. While this seems like a good idea it made me cringe.
First of all, it is almost impossible to fasten a material such as leather securely to a desk in such a manner that the leather cannot stretch. What happens when the leather stretches? The attachment of the gun begins to sag. When it sags the holder becomes more difficult to manage when you are trying to extract your handgun. Second, when it sags it becomes more noticeable to those who may enter his desk area that something is hanging down. The idea behind concealed is that it cannot be easily seen or detected.
I steered my client towards a better, more secure alternative.
Just like everything else on the Internet, just because it is published does not mean it is worth reading or trying. Including my writings. Think poeple.
